Roads and places in Homestead and Florida City
Homestead and Florida City sit at the southern end of Miami-Dade County. The two cities share a border, and a lot of South Florida traffic funnels through them. The Homestead Extension of Florida’s Turnpike runs south through the area and ends at US-1 in Florida City. US-1, known here as South Dixie Highway, carries local traffic, commuters and visitors.
Running next to US-1 is the South Dade TransitWay, a busway used only by county buses between Dadeland South and SW 344th Street. Gate arms at some crossings stop cars during busy hours so buses can pass. Drivers, bus riders and people walking to the stations all share these crossings.
South of Florida City, US-1 becomes the 18-mile stretch to Key Largo. Card Sound Road is the other way in and out of the Keys. On the west side, Krome Avenue (State Road 997) runs north from Homestead through farmland. Campbell Drive serves as a truck route around downtown Homestead and Florida City.
The area is also home to the Homestead-Miami Speedway and the Homestead Air Reserve Base, and Homestead calls itself the gateway to Everglades and Biscayne National Parks. Race weekends, park visitors and drivers heading to the Keys all add traffic. Homestead Hospital, part of Baptist Health, runs a 24-hour emergency room on Campbell Drive.
Crashes on city streets are usually handled by the Homestead Police Department or the Florida City Police Department. Crashes on the Turnpike are usually handled by the Florida Highway Patrol, and the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office covers unincorporated areas such as the Redland. You can learn how to get a copy of your report in our guide to the Miami-Dade crash report.
Car accidents in Homestead and Florida City
Rear-end crashes where the Turnpike traffic meets US-1, side-impact crashes at busy intersections, and head-on crashes on two-lane rural roads can all cause serious injuries. Afternoon rainstorms make roads slick and cut visibility for much of the year. Visitors who do not know the roads add to the risk.
Florida is a no-fault state. Your own personal injury protection (PIP) pays first, up to $10,000, no matter who caused the crash. It covers 80% of medical bills and 60% of lost wages, and you must get medical care within 14 days. Florida does not require most drivers to carry bodily injury coverage, so the at-fault driver may have little or none. That is why uninsured motorist coverage often matters. Our Miami car accident lawyer page explains more.
Truck and farm vehicle crashes in the Redland
The Redland, just northwest of Homestead, is farm country. It grows tropical fruit, including avocados, and has many ornamental plant nurseries. That means produce trucks, nursery trucks, tractor-trailers and slow-moving farm equipment share rural roads like Krome Avenue with cars and school traffic. A car that comes up fast behind a tractor, or a truck turning wide out of a farm entrance, can cause a serious crash.
Truck cases are often more complex than car cases. The driver, the motor carrier, the truck owner, the company that loaded the cargo and the company that maintained the truck may all share the blame. Federal rules limit truck drivers to 11 hours of driving within a 14-hour window after 10 hours off duty, and electronic logging devices record those hours. Those records can be lost if no one asks for them early. See our Miami truck accident lawyer page.
Motorcycle accidents on the way to the Keys
Riders heading to the Keys share US-1 and Card Sound Road with trucks, RVs and boat trailers. Closer to town, a driver who turns left in front of a rider or changes lanes without looking can cause serious harm. PIP does not cover motorcycle riders, so health insurance, UM coverage and a claim against the at-fault driver become very important.
Riders over 21 may ride without a helmet in Florida if they carry at least $10,000 in medical benefits coverage. Not wearing a helmet does not stop you from making a claim, but the insurer may argue it should reduce what you recover. See our Miami motorcycle accident lawyer page.
Pedestrian accidents
Many people in Homestead and Florida City walk to work, to stores and to bus stops along US-1. Drivers turning at intersections or pulling out of parking lots can hit someone on foot. A pedestrian hit by a car can usually turn to PIP first: your own policy, then a resident relative’s policy, and if neither exists, the PIP of the vehicle that hit you. If the driver fled, report it to police right away, because UM coverage may help. Read more on our pedestrian accident page.
Slip and fall injuries in stores
Supermarkets, shopping centers and gas stations along US-1 and Campbell Drive see heavy foot traffic. Spills, wet floors, loose mats and broken pavement can cause falls that break hips and wrists or hurt backs. Under Florida law, if you slip on a spill or other substance in a business, you must show the business knew about it or should have known. For example, the spill was there long enough that staff should have found it, or the same problem kept happening. Take photos and report the fall to a manager. See our Miami slip and fall lawyer page.
Workers hurt by someone other than their employer
If you were hurt at work, workers’ compensation is a separate system with its own rules. But sometimes someone outside your company caused the harm. A farm or nursery worker may be hit by another company’s truck on a rural road. A delivery driver may be rear-ended while making a stop. In cases like these, you may have a third-party claim against the other driver or company. We can review whether one exists.
Wrongful death claims for South Dade families
When a crash or other careless act takes a life, Florida law allows a wrongful death claim. The personal representative of the estate files the claim on behalf of the estate and the survivors, such as a spouse, children and parents. Before founding Redondo Law in 2019, Mike spent six years at Holland & Knight defending major corporations in catastrophic injury and wrongful death cases. He knows how the other side builds its defense. Learn more on our Miami wrongful death lawyer page.

Florida law you should know
Most negligence claims from injuries on or after March 24, 2023 must be filed within 2 years, and a wrongful death claim must be filed within 2 years of the death. Claims against a government agency require written notice first and have damage caps. Florida uses modified comparative negligence: if you are found more than 50% at fault, you generally recover nothing, and if you are 50% or less at fault, your recovery is reduced by your share. In a hypothetical case where you are found 20% at fault, your recovery would be reduced by 20%.
How working with a Miami-based firm works
We do not have an office in Homestead or Florida City. Our only office is at 2828 Coral Way in Miami. For most clients, that makes little difference. You can meet with us by phone, by video or in person at the Miami office. If your injuries keep you from traveling, we come to you, at home or in the hospital.
Lawsuits are filed in the county where the case belongs. Homestead and Florida City are in Miami-Dade County, so most cases are filed in the 11th Judicial Circuit. A crash farther south in Monroe County may belong there instead. Mike Redondo is the firm’s attorney. He is licensed throughout Florida, and Mike personally oversees every case.
