Roads and places in Pinecrest and South Miami
US-1, known as South Dixie Highway, is the main road through this part of the county. It runs through South Miami. Farther south it forms the western border of Pinecrest, where the village calls it Pinecrest Parkway. Sunset Drive (SW 72nd Street) runs east and west through downtown South Miami, a walkable area of shops and restaurants. Red Road (SW 57th Avenue) runs north and south along the east side of South Miami, next to the University of Miami campus, and continues south through Pinecrest.
Killian Drive runs east from US-1 into Pinecrest. Pinecrest Gardens, the former site of Parrot Jungle and now a village park, sits at 11000 Red Road and hosts concerts and other events. The Shops at Sunset Place sit at US-1 and Red Road and are slated for redevelopment, so expect construction traffic in the area.
Just west of Pinecrest is Dadeland, home to Dadeland Mall and a cluster of high-rise buildings between US-1 and the Palmetto Expressway (SR 826). The Palmetto ends at an interchange with US-1 on the Pinecrest and Kendall line, just south of the Dadeland South Metrorail station. Metrorail runs along US-1, with stations at South Miami (SW 72nd Street and US-1), Dadeland North (SW 70th Avenue and US-1) and Dadeland South. Many Metrobus routes end at Dadeland South. For more on busy roads across the county, read our guide to major roads in Miami-Dade.
The Pinecrest Police Department handles crashes and incidents in the village, and the South Miami Police Department handles them in the city. The Florida Highway Patrol often handles crashes on the Palmetto Expressway, and the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office covers nearby unincorporated areas such as Dadeland and Kendall. Baptist Health South Miami Hospital, at US-1 and SW 62nd Avenue, has an emergency room open 24 hours a day. To get your report, see our guide to the Miami-Dade crash report.
Car accidents on US-1, Sunset Drive and Red Road
Stop-and-go traffic on South Dixie Highway leads to rear-end crashes. Drivers turning left across US-1, pulling out of shopping center lots and merging near the Palmetto interchange can cause side-impact crashes. Afternoon rainstorms add more risk.
Florida is a no-fault state. Your own personal injury protection (PIP) coverage pays first, up to $10,000, no matter who caused the crash. It pays 80% of medical bills and 60% of lost wages, and you must get medical care within 14 days. Florida does not require most drivers to carry bodily injury coverage, so the at-fault driver may have little or none. Uninsured motorist coverage can help fill that gap. Our Miami car accident lawyer page explains more.
If the driver who hit you was drunk, the case can change. Florida allows punitive damages against a drunk driver in the right case. A bar or restaurant is liable only in narrow situations, such as knowingly serving a person habitually addicted to alcohol or willfully serving someone under 21. See our drunk driver accident page.
School traffic and school zone accidents
Pinecrest has five public schools and many private schools, including Gulliver Preparatory, Miami Palmetto Senior High, Palmetto Middle and Pinecrest Elementary. Drop-off and pickup fill local streets with cars, buses and kids on foot. The village runs a School Zone Camera Safety Program, with speed cameras near several schools on roads such as SW 88th Street, SW 120th Street, SW 67th Avenue and Red Road.
Drivers in both directions must stop for a stopped school bus with its stop arm out, except traffic going the opposite way on a highway divided by a raised median or an unpaved space of at least 5 feet. If your child was hurt in a school zone or near a bus stop, report it, get the names of witnesses and ask the school about any video. A claim involving a public school bus or other government vehicle needs written notice first and has damage caps.
Pedestrian and Metrorail-area accidents
People walk to and from the South Miami, Dadeland North and Dadeland South stations every day. Crossing US-1, walking through busy parking lots and catching buses at Dadeland South all put people on foot close to fast traffic.
If you were hit while walking, PIP usually still applies. Your own PIP pays first. If you have none, a resident relative’s policy may apply. If neither exists, the PIP of the vehicle that hit you may apply. If the driver fled, call police right away, because UM coverage may help. See our Miami pedestrian accident lawyer page.
Cyclists, e-bike riders and scooter riders face the same risks with even less protection. Insurance for these riders can work differently, so sort out early which policies apply. Read our e-bike and scooter accident page.
Parking lot and slip and fall injuries at shopping centers
Dadeland Mall, downtown South Miami and the shopping centers along US-1 mean crowded lots and garages. Drivers backing out, cutting across rows or speeding through garages can hit other cars and people on foot. See our parking lot accident page.
Inside stores and restaurants, spills, wet floors after a storm and broken steps can cause serious falls. If you slip on a spill or other substance in a business, Florida law requires you to show the business knew about it or should have known, for example because it was there long enough that staff should have found it. See our Miami slip and fall lawyer page.
What to do after an injury in Pinecrest or South Miami
- Call 911. Ask for police and medical help for anyone who is hurt.
- Get medical care right away. After a car crash, you must be seen within 14 days to use PIP.
- Take photos of the scene, the vehicles or hazard, and your injuries.
- Get the names and phone numbers of witnesses, and ask for the report number.
- If you were hurt at a store, mall or school, report it to management or staff and ask for a copy of the incident report.
- Ask in writing that video be kept. Store, school and traffic cameras may record over old footage.
- Do not give a recorded statement to the other driver’s insurer.
- Call us before you sign anything from an insurance company.
Florida law you should know
Most negligence claims from injuries on or after March 24, 2023 must be filed within 2 years, and a wrongful death claim must be filed within 2 years of the death. Claims against a government agency, such as a city, the county or a public school district, require written notice first and have damage caps. Florida uses modified comparative negligence: if you are found more than 50% at fault, you generally recover nothing, and if you are 50% or less at fault, your recovery is reduced by your share. In a hypothetical case where you are found 20% at fault, your recovery would be reduced by 20%.
How working with a Miami-based firm works
We do not have an office in Pinecrest or South Miami. Our only office is at 2828 Coral Way in Miami, a short drive north. You can meet with us by phone, by video or in person at the Miami office. If your injuries keep you from traveling, we come to you, at home or in the hospital. If you live closer to Coral Gables or Kendall, see our Coral Gables accident attorney and Kendall personal injury lawyer pages.
Lawsuits are filed in the county where the case belongs. Pinecrest and South Miami are in Miami-Dade County, so most cases are filed in the 11th Judicial Circuit. Mike Redondo is the firm’s attorney, and he is licensed throughout Florida. Mike personally oversees every case. Before founding Redondo Law in 2019, he spent six years at Holland & Knight defending major corporations in catastrophic injury and wrongful death cases, so he knows how large companies build a defense. When a crash takes a life, we also help families with wrongful death claims.
Frequently asked questions
Do you have an office in Pinecrest or South Miami?
No. Our only office is at 2828 Coral Way in Miami. Clients in Pinecrest and South Miami meet with us by phone, by video or at that office. If you cannot travel because of your injuries, we come to you.
Who investigates a crash in Pinecrest or South Miami?
The Pinecrest Police Department handles crashes in the village, and the South Miami Police Department handles crashes in the city. The Florida Highway Patrol often handles crashes on the Palmetto Expressway, and the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office covers unincorporated areas such as Dadeland.
My child was hurt in a school zone. What should I do?
Get medical care first. Then report the crash to police, get witness names and ask the school whether any video exists, since it may not be kept long. If a school bus or other public vehicle was involved, written notice is required before a claim, so call us early.
I was hit walking near a Metrorail station. Who pays?
Usually your own PIP pays first. If you have none, a resident relative’s policy may apply, and if neither exists, the PIP of the vehicle that hit you may apply. If the driver was at fault and your injuries are serious, you may also have a claim against that driver. If a county bus or train was involved, special notice rules apply.
How much does it cost to hire you?
The consultation is free, and there is no fee unless we win. Florida Bar rules limit contingency fees, and you will receive and sign a Statement of Client’s Rights before we begin.
